Summary:
The Exotic Animal Veterinary Technician is responsible for providing high-quality veterinary care and assistance in the treatment of exotic animals within our veterinary practice. This position requires extensive knowledge and experience in exotic animal handling, nursing, and medical procedures. The Exotic Animal Veterinary Technician will work closely with veterinarians, veterinary nurses, and other team members to ensure the highest level of care is delivered to our exotic animal patients.
Responsibilities:
1. Assisting veterinarians in the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of exotic animals, including but not limited to reptiles, birds, small mammals, and amphibians.
2. Administering medications, vaccinations, and treatments as directed by veterinarians.
3. Assisting in surgical procedures, including operating room preparation, anesthesia administration, patient monitoring, and post-operative care.
4. Conducting laboratory tests, such as blood work, urinalysis, and fecal examinations, and accurately recording and reporting results.
5. Monitoring vital signs, documenting patient history, and maintaining accurate medical records.
6. Providing compassionate care and handling of exotic animals, ensuring their comfort and well-being throughout their stay at the clinic.
7. Assisting with radiographic imaging and interpretation under the guidance of veterinarians.
8. Maintaining a clean and organized work environment, including proper sanitation of equipment and exam rooms.
9. Educating clients on proper exotic animal care, including nutrition, environmental enrichment, and preventive healthcare.
10. Collaborating with veterinary staff to develop and implement treatment plans for exotic animal patients.
11. Assisting with the restraint and handling of exotic animals during examinations, procedures, and treatments.
12. Participating in continuing education programs to stay updated on the latest advancements in exotic animal medicine and veterinary nursing.
Qualifications:
1. Associate or Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology or related field.
2. Certification as a Veterinary Technician or eligible to obtain certification.
3. Minimum of 2 years of experience working as a Veterinary Technician, preferably with a focus on exotic animals.
4. In-depth knowledge of exotic animal handling, restraint, and nursing techniques.
5. Proficient in administering medications, vaccinations, and treatments to exotic animals.
6. Strong understanding of veterinary medical terminology and ability to maintain accurate medical records.
7. Ability to operate and maintain veterinary equipment and instruments.
8. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively educate clients and collaborate with veterinary team members.
9. Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment.
10. Compassionate and empathetic towards animals, demonstrating a genuine desire to provide the highest level of care.
11. Flexibility to work occasional evenings, weekends, or holidays as needed.
12. Knowledge of and adherence to veterinary laws, regulations, and ethical standards.
